Psoriasis

Psoriasis shows up as sharply defined, red, scaly patches on the skin that normally have no itching. It may come on at any age, and there is often a positive family history of psoriasis. The most common regions of involvement are the elbows, knees, and scalp though psoriasis can occur anywhere on the epidermis and typically triggers classical changes in the fingernails. Arthritis may be associated with psoriasis that when present can change the therapeutic options.

Psoriasis is treated with topical steroids, topical tar, and topical Vitamin D ointments and creams. For further extensive or persistent cases a laser or ultraviolet light therapy provided at our office is extremely useful as are oral and injectable medications. Recent studies show an immune system basis for psoriasis, and the new injectable biologic medications work by blocking certain parts of your immune system. The future offers much hope for patients with psoriasis as our understanding of the immune system and its role in psoriasis grows.

XTRAC Scalp Psoriasis Treatment

Scalp Psoriasis can be cleared.

Because of the shielding effect of hair, traditional UVB lamp therapy is not very effective against scalp psoriasis. However, studies have reported success in treating it with the XTRAC excimer laser which generates a targeted beam of UVB light. XTRAC allows for simple manual separation of the hair, provides good visualization of the psoriasis and permits rapid treatment so that a whole scalp can often be treated in less than 15 minutes.

XTRAC Vitiligo (loss of pigment) Treatment

Vitiligo (the condition of loss of pigment to the skin) doesn’t have to be forever. With the XTRAC treatment Vitiligo can be minimized and in many cases even eliminated. Though the laser spot size measures only 18mm x 18mm, due to rapid exposure times, relatively large, discrete areas can be treated in just 5 to 10 minutes, which is much quicker than the duration of conventional phototherapy light sessions. Most importantly, XTRAC treatments achieve complete response rates faster in a higher proportion of patients.
